CareFree Italy - Rome
View all regionsRome is the capital of Italy, politically, culturally and spiritually it is a joyous city with a real lust for life. Ornate palaces with their tall gracious facades line every street in the historical centre, hidden piazzas buzz with life, try the Campo dei Fiori early in the morning. The River Tiber separates east from west and has a range of boat tours that thrive along its banks, there is also a tree packed island in the middle. Trastevere is the neighbourhood that lies north of the river and was isolated for centuries by a lack of bridges so it has developed its own distinct flavour and is popular with artists, writers and has a wealth of small coffee shops and galleries.
The Vatican city is where the pope resides, it has its own soldiers, taxes and laws and naturally masses held at St Peters are ever popular. No trip to rome, regardless of whether you are following the trail of the Da Vinci code or just following your nose would be complete without a trip here. Ever popular are the Coliseum, the Appian way, the Trevi Fountain, Piazza della Repubblica, the Spanish steps and shopping on the Via Veneto. Rome will exhaust you but always leaves a smile on your face.
As with all major cities care has to be taken in certain areas but as long as you are sensible then Rome can be enticing, exciting and relaxing. Don't forget that on any Roman holiday you need to relax as well as sightsee and shop, sit back in a café in a piazza and enjoy modern life at a vastly different pace from our own. There is so much to see and so much to do it can be easy to forget we all need time to unwind. Remember that such splendour takes time to absorb and for you to get a feel for the atmosphere of one of the great cities of the world you need to go at a Roman pace, take time out and look about you, if you rush and hurry you could miss a lot.
