View all regionsWhen you think about Tuscany you can’t help but think of Florence, the famous Duomo with its domed cuppola roof, the Uffizi gallery with unique works of art, Michelangelo’s "David", the river Arno and any number of other sights created at the height of its power during the Renaissance.
But whether this is your first time to Florence or whether you are here so often you are almost a local you'll discover that this marvellous experience offers more than just museums, art galleries and culture. It is an extremely liveable city too, with great markets, fabulous boutiques and a total lack of chain stores. individuality is the key to Florence.
Shopping and socialising rank highly on any Florentines daily "to do" list, so mingle, join in with the locals, make the most of this vibrant city, Enjoy an espresso in Piazza della Republica while flipping through a copy of the pink Gazzetto dello Sport, essential reading for all Florentines. Take time with a hand made gelato browsing the jewellery shops of the Ponte Vecchio, at the north end is a glove shop with the softest calfskin in a range of colours the like of which you'll never have seen or see again.
Piazza life in florence is everything, Santa Croce and Santo Spirito districts both have bars in them after dark when the locals come out to socialise before and after dinner. Florentines do not come with volume control! Florence is the fashion capital of Tuscany and between the Bulgari's, Ferragamos, Valentinos and Pradas you'll find Miu Miu, Paul Smith and a number of other world famous names vying for space. Dining out is a joy as there are so many reasonably priced restaurants and family run trattorias. Not to miss are anything that is grilled, game, steaks, chops and sausages as the Tuscan is a real carnivore. vegetables are always ordered separately. Florence is also centre of the ice cream industry so to miss out on any ice cream (gelato) made in the traditional way (artigianato) using fresh local ingredients would be like going to Venice and not riding a Gondola - unforgiveable.
