CareFree Italy - Pisa
View all regionsPisa is one of the oldest cities in Italy. Originally one of the four maritime republics along with Venice, Genova, and Naples its wealth was secured by sea trade. Due to its international airport it is now the main gateway to Tuscany and has the busiest airport in the region. Keats, Byron and Shelly all came to Pisa as part of their Grand Tour in the 1800's but nowadays most people arrive by coach, visit the main piazza made famous by Leonardo da Vinci's leaning tower of Pisa, tiptoe through the duomo and the baptisty , pay their €15 euros then get back on the coach and leave without realising how wonderful the city is.
We recommend the Piazza dei Cavalieri, the university, the oldest botanic garden in Europe, a coffee in the first recorded hotel in Italy then a stroll along the river Arno to see the palaces, museums and townhouses.
Pisa is very much a market town and the weekend markets differ every week concentrating on antiques one week, food the next, clothing the next and so on. Naturally there is a wide selection every week but the first sunday of every month is the biggest of all.
Due to having a population somewhere in the region of 100,000 there are ample opportunities for fine dining. Enjoy lunch in a hidden trattoria away from the main streets, try the aniseed flavoured crisps, enjoy a wide range of local wines and enjoy Tuscany in miniature.
Ironically, if the tower hadn't been so deficient then Pisa may not have become so famous. Now that it is, one is able to enjoy boat trips up the Arno and horse buggy rides about town with access to the largest tourist information centre outside of Rome!
